Course Summary (Operative)

Who Should Attend?

The New Roads & Street Works training programme is designed for Operatives who carry out excavation, backfill and reinstatement of various materials in the Highway.

Aim

This training course provides delegates with the skills and knowledge to perform operative duties to the standards prescribed in-line with the current New Roads and Street Works (NRSWA) Act, in order to safeguard themselves and others.

Is this course CITB Grant claimable?

You can claim up to £120 as long as you provide us with your CITB Levy number either at the time of booking or on the day of the course.

Training Course Content

001 Location of underground apparatus.
002 Signing, lighting and guarding.
003 Excavation in the highway.
004 Reinstatement of compaction and backfill materials.
005 Reinstatement of sub-base and road base non-bituminous materials.
006 Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials.
007 Reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials.
009 Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.

Operative Qualifications

Signing, Lighting and Guarding (Unit 2)
Excavation in the highway (Units 1-3).
Excavation, backfill & reinstatement of construction layers with a bituminous surface (Units 1-6).
Reinstatement of construction layers in hot-lay and cold-lay bituminous materials (Units 1, 2, 6 & 7).
Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (Units 1, 2 & 9).

By the end of the training course delegates will be able to:

Summarise the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works (NRSW) Act.
Select appropriate personal protective and safety equipment as required to carry out street works activities. Perform duties of each unit and/or qualification as prescribed in-line with current legislation, and ACOP where applicable. Provide a safe working environment for themselves and others. Training Course Methods Classroom based theory training with oral and written questions and practical assessments. A training group may contain a mix of both Operatives and Supervisors. Sessions will be varied within
the overall framework to allow the most effective development of the candidate.

Who Should Attend?

This training course is designed for Supervisors who are required to monitor Operatives performing excavation, backfill and reinstatement duties.

Aim

To provide delegates with the skills and knowledge to perform Supervisor duties to the standards prescribed by City & Guilds in-line with the NRSW Act 1991, in order to safeguard themselves and others.

Is this course CITB Grant claimable?

You can claim up to £120 as long as you provide us with your CITB Levy number either at the time of booking or on the day of the course.

001 Location and avoidance of underground apparatus.
0010 Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding.
0011 Monitoring excavation in the highway.
0012 Monitoring reinstatement of compaction and backfill materials.
0013 Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and road base non-bituminous materials.
0014 Monitoring reinstatement of bituminous materials.
0016 Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.
Supervisor Qualifications
Monitoring excavation in the highway (Units 1,10 & 11).
Monitoring excavation, backfill & reinstatement of construction layers with a bituminous surface
(Units 1, 10-14).
Monitoring reinstatement of construction layers in bituminous materials (Units 1, 10 & 14).
Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs (Units 1, 10 & 15).
Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (Units 1, 10 & 16).

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

Summarise the requirements of the current NRSW Act.
Select appropriate personal protective and safety equipment as required to carry out street works activities. Monitor duties performed by Operatives for each unit and/or qualification as prescribed by City & Guilds. Standards in-line with current legislation, and ACOP where applicable. Provide a safe working environment for themselves and others.

Training Course Methods

A high proportion of practical exercises and simulated assessments will be supplemented with video and classroom based tutorials. Supervisors have to demonstrate the ability to monitor a site and compile written reports in order to successfully complete the course. A training group may contain a mix of both Supervisors and Operatives; however, a minimum of 2 Operatives must be available for Supervisors to carry out monitoring exercises, thus enabling the most effective development of these candidates.
